THE National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) in collaboration with the Belait District Football Association (PBDB) and with full support from the Youth and Sports Department of the Belait District Branch held its Grassroot 4×4 Game Festival for the first time in the Belait District at the football fields of the Seria Sports Arena Complex besides the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC) yesterday.
The one-day five-a-side football tournament saw seven teams from across the Belait District competing. Each team comprised at most ten players of 11-and 12-year olds with one supervisor.
The seven teams were BSRC FC Youth (Red), SR Panaga (Red), Hawa FT, SR Muhammad Alam Seria, BSRC FC Youth (Yellow), SR Panaga (Yellow) and BSRC FC Youth (Green).
Head of Grassroot Development at the NFABD Haji Rozaimienizan bin Haji Jainal said the event provided a competitive-friendly platform for grassroots players in the district to not only further develop and nurture their footballing skills and talents, but also to search for those with potential to represent the district at the national level.
It was also held to promote a healthy lifestyle among youth in the country.
The teams first competed in a round robin format with the top four teams selected to compete in the champion’s group while the remaining three teams competed in the plate group.
Teams in both groups competed against each other in another round robin format to determine their rankings in the tournament.
BSRC FC Youth (Red), SR Panaga (Red), Hawa FT and SR Muhammad Alam Seria qualfiied for the champion’s group, where BSRC FC Youth (Red) won all their matches to be ranked first overall, while SR Panaga (Red) and Hawa FT came in second and third in the rankings respectively.
In the plate group, SR Panaga (Yellow) ranked first while BSRC FC Youth (Yellow) and BSRC FC Youth (Green) ranked second and third respectively.
Executive Committee member at the NFABD and Secretary-General at the PBDB Morni bin Haji Zakaria presented the medals to the top three teams from the champion’s group and the top team from the plate group along with their supervisors.
The other teams also received participation medals.
The top three teams from the champion’s group and the top team from the plate group will represent the Belait District and compete in a national tournament slated to be held on June 30 at the NFABD House in the Brunei-Muara District.
With four other teams selected from the Brunei-Muara and Tutong districts, the NFABD will hold a similar tournament in the Temburong District sometime next week to select four more teams from Temburong to compete in the national tournament.
