Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin batted a softball at the field of the Berakas Sports Complex yesterday to officiate the opening ceremony of the 5th Ladies’ and 7th Men’s Masters Fastpitch Softball Brunei Darussalam (NBT Trophy) Tournament 2019.
Organised by the Brunei Amateur Baseball and Softball Association (BASBA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), the tournament attracted participation of countries such as Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, as well as host Brunei Darussalam.
BASBA President Pehin Orang Kaya Lela Pahlawan Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Mohd Jaafar bin Haji Abdul Aziz in his remarks highlighted that softball was introduced in Brunei Darussalam since 1982 by the Youth and Sports Department, and that in a period of 37 years BASBA has united the Brunei community in recreation and softball.
This year, he said, “BASBA has introduced softball to schools and higher learning institutions. With the initiative, it is hoped that a growing number of the young generation will take part in softball in the coming years.”
On the facilities provided by the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the BASBA President said, “On the collaboration policy between the MCYS and BASBA, discussions have been carried out on the progress to develop a number of sites to become the permanent fields for softball. It is hoped that the facilities will become a centre for the development of softball for the youth and young generation.”
Following the speech by the BASBA President, NBT Brunei Managing Director Haji Ahmad Omar bin Pehin Dato Haji Husin handed over the tournament’s NBT Trophy to the BASBA President, witnessed by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The minister was also introduced to each participating team on the field. Prior to the opening ceremony, the Brunei men’s softball team lost their first match of the tournament to the Hong Kong team with the score of 12-0.
