The Shitoryu Karate Association Brunei Darussalam grabbed three gold medals and four bronze medals at the 2nd SKAS Open Karate Championship organised by the Shotokan Karate Association of Sabah at the 1Borneo Mall in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah recently.

The gold medals were won by Md Amirul Azri bin Ali Amzah in the senior male individual kumite under 84kg, Sallyanasuby Isal in the senior female individual kumite over 68kg and Dania Hana Sofea binti Haji Khallidden in the girls’ individual kumite under 14 years old.

The team’s four bronze medals came from Siti Amal Nadhirah binti Abdul Latif in the senior female individual kata, Md Umarali bin Abdullah Md Shamsol in the boys’ junior individual kumite under 55kg, Md Jafni Fakhrillah bin Haji Jabidi in the senior male individual kumite under 75kg, and Rafeequl Hayat bin Dr Abdul Nasir in the boys’ cadet individual kumite under 70kg.

The Shitoryu Karate Association Brunei Darussalam finished in eighth place in the overall medal tally. The United Shotokan Karate Labuan won the event with nine gold medals, five silver medals and nine bronze medals.

The karatekas from the Shitoryu Karate Association Brunei Darussalam competed under the guidance of head coach Md Nabil bin Abdul Malik.

A total of 22 entries from clubs, associations, schools and uniformed teams joined the two-day competition which saw participation of countries from Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Iran.
