Brunei Darussalam petanque athletes Azmi Eddy bin Mohd Harris, Muhammad Faris bin Masri and Abdul Afiq bin Abdul Aziz grabbed a bronze medal in the men’s triples of the 2nd Thailand Petanque International Invitation 2019 in Rayong, Thailand.
Held from September 5-10, host nation Thailand which comprised Somyod Yindeesup, Sathaporn Ongnoi and Warit Songma struck gold while Taiwan trio Hsu Ting-Jui, Chang Hog-Da and Wu Hong-Wen claimed silver.
Thailand’s Sarawut Sriboonpeng, Thanakor Sangkaew and Wanchaloem Srimueang also won joint bronze alongside Brunei after their semi-final finish.
Brunei duo Muhammad Faris and Abdul Afiq have only tasted experience in regional competitions, but coach Wirna bin Haji Mohd Yasin was satisfied with their displays.
“In the quarter-finals of the men’s triples, the team’s performance was satisfying. In the semi-finals, the players tried to improve their game to reach the final,” said Wirna in an interview with the Bulletin during the team’s arrival at the Brunei International Airport yesterday. “Alhamdulillah, the three players showed a very good performance in the competition.”
Azmi Eddy was the most experienced of the trio, having gained years of international experience and has featured with other men’s triples line-ups.
Meanwhile, the women’s team comprising Nur Amatulafiqah, Hajah Surianah binti Haji Abdul Timbul and Wedy Nurul Suzuna binti Luon made the cut in the top eight of the women’s triples event.
Brunei Darussalam women’s team coach Hajah Norhaini binti Haji Dollah highlighted how tough it was to go deep into the competition considering the strength of the other teams.
“For the women’s team, they reached the top eight and it is hard to get into this position,” she said.
Wirna also lavished praise in particular to a member of the women’s team who displayed a very good performance, having only been absorbed to the national setup in February.
The men’s team coach praised the newcomers in the women’s triples for their fine performances, echoing Hajah Norhaini’s sentiments that it was not an easy feat to reach the top eight stage.
Meanwhile, in a separate competition, another Brunei team reached the top 16 stage at the 28th International HCMC Labour Culture Palace Open Petanque Championship in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
President of the Brunei Darussalam Petanque Federation Haji Mohamad bin Panglima Asgar Dato Paduka Haji Abdullah welcomed the teams on arrival at the Brunei International Airport.
